NVCOG administers a 15-town Household Hazardous Waste collection region for residents of Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethlehem, Derby, Middlebury, Naugatuck, Oxford, Prospect, Seymour, Southbury, Thomaston, Waterbury, Watertown, Wolcott and Woodbury.

HHW events give residents the opportunity to properly dispose of hazardous materials that are commonly used in the home including paint, pesticides, household cleaners, poisons, and chemicals. The goal of the program is to keep potentially hazardous waste out of local landfills and sewers, providing extra protection for wetlands and waterways. Three hazardous waste disposal days are held annually.

There is a cap of 50 lbs. of waste per resident unless arrangements are made in advance. If you think you might exceed this limit, send an email with your name, address, and type of waste to hhw@nvcogct.gov by Monday before the collection date.

For more information on how to properly dispose of common household items, check out our  “How Do I Dispose of” brochure

Did you know that you can recycle your mattress for free in Connecticut?

In 2013, Connecticut became the first state to pass extended producer responsibility (EPR) legislation for mattresses - similar to the PaintCare program at our HHW events.
